Author Interview -- Ann Lister

When I first started these interviews for the blog, I had a list of authors that I thought I would work myself up to personally asking if they would be interested in doing an interview.  Those authors are the ones that I can be known to fangirl over.  When I saw a comment from one of those authors on the sign up post for the interviews, I was a little speechless.

I started reading Ann Lister many years ago and have kept up to date on EVERY new release.  I am a huge fan of the MM genre and she is only one of a couple that I snatch up as soon as they are live without looking at any summary.  She is an author that I will reread time and time again because there are so many different levels to her books.  I have lost count of how many times I have read Take What You Want and Fighting his Fire.

I am beyond excited to post this and I hope everyone enjoys!

Ladies and Gents, Ann Lister.

Ann Lister is a native New Englander currently living on the island of Martha’s Vineyard with her
husband. She has pulled details from her years living in the New England area and uses many local
settings and landmarks in her novels.

After graduating art school, marrying, and raising two daughters, she established her own video
production company. Her nearly two decades working in video production included work within the
music industry and won her a coveted Telly Award. Her ‘behind-the-scenes’ exposure to the music
world and her love of rock music is the inspiration for her erotic rock star romances.
The Rock Gods series gave her Bestselling Author status on Amazon. Beyond The Music, Book 7 in
the series, hit #1 in the Gay Erotica genre during the Pre-Order and held that spot for several weeks.
This last book in The Rock Gods series launches the spin-off series, Guarding The Gods, which
releases in early Summer of 2016.

Fall For Me, Book One in the series was a Finalist in the 2013 Rainbow Award. Each book in this
series brings her two favorite elements together: musicians and the love between two men. These
stories focus on what it truly means to love; love unconditionally, love without restrictions or labels,
love without fear or judgment – to just simply love.

Have you ever based a character on a real person just so you could decide their fate (whether it be good or bad)?
Typically, I take traits from several different people I know and then create a character from that.  I also like using the names of people I have known from my past. I've done that several times.
What are three words that would describe your writing style?
Erotic, romantic, musically themed
Where is your favorite writing spot?
A place with lots of sun, comfortable with good sound quality to play music.
What is a must when you are writing? Food? Quiet? A furry friend?
That answer changes with the scene I might be writing.  If I'm working on a scene with my rock bands, then I like to listen to music.  If the scene is sexy, then I like quiet around me so I can completely feel the scene.  I have two elderly sister pugs and they're with me no matter what scene I'm writing! LOL
What is the most research you have ever had to dig into with a character or plot?
I had to research military protocols, history of the Marine's, their symbolism and details like that to write the characters in the Guarding The Gods series, since many of the characters in that series are former Marines.  It was fascinating to learn the meaning behind the elements of their logo, all about Crucible week, and so many other traditions! Military slang terms were also fun to learn!
What is the one thing that you have immediately regretted googling when you were researching?
Photographs of gun shot wounds.  I needed to know what kind of damage a certain kind of gun/bullet would do to a particular area of the body.  Let's just say, if my hard drive was ever confiscated by law enforcement I'd be in for a very long interrogation!
If you could bring any one of your "book worlds" or another authors to reality, whose would it be?
I love the fictional world of The Rock Gods.  The balance they have created between working on stage performing for thousands of fans and their quiet home lives with family is impressive.  Both aspects of their lives are vastly different and both are equally interesting and appealing to me. These are people I'd love to hang around with on the weekends.
Currently reading anything?
I just finished reading Getting Lucky by Daryl  Banner and loved it.
Favorite Genre?
By far my favorite genre is MM romance.
First Ugly Cry?
Wow, it's been a while since a book made me "ugly cry."  A few years back I read a story that took my by surprise and I cried for days, but I can't remember the name of that book.
First Book Boyfriend?
I'm not sure I can remember the first one from another author's book, but my first serious crush from my own books is easy to remember.  Michael Wade from Sheet Music: A Rock 'n' Roll Love Story. He was my first "rock god" and I fell hard for him.
First Cliffhanger that drove you crazy till the next book?
I try not to read cliffhangers stories before the next installment is already in print.  There is less of a let down that way.
Favorite Author(s)?
Sweet mercy!  I have so many favorite authors and picking just a few to put here isn't fair.  I like simple, feel good, erotic MM romance with a little humor. I don't need a lot of angst, or mystery, paranormal elements, etc.  Just give me a great boy-meets-boy love story and you'll own my heart.
A Villain/Bad Guy that you rooted for?
Sadly, I can't think of any at the moment.
THE book or author that started your dream of writing?
Years and years ago, when I first started reading romance, I would read Sandra Brown, then discovered Jackie Collins.  I loved their story telling but I needed even more fire between the main characters then they were providing with their stories.  As Amazon started to broaden their erotic romance catalog, I was able to broaden my reading and that's when I found authors like Shayla Black and Jaci Burton.  A whole new world opened up for me and I couldn't get enough.
A character that you saw a lot of yourself in?
I put pieces of myself in all of my characters, but Lincoln and Dante (from my Rock Gods series) have the biggest pieces of me in them.  Lincoln has MS as I do and Dante is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, same as me. Some of the dialog in both of their stories was taken directly from my own life while I dealt with therapists and medical professionals.
Do you collect paperbacks or do your prefer your kindle?
I prefer my kindle to read a book, but I collect paperbacks of my favorite stories - author signed if I can manage to make that happen.
Signed paperbacks, do you read them or are they on the shelf and never opened?
An author signed paperback is a prized possession to me.  It goes on a shelf and is only ever touched by me. LOL
Pet Peeves?

Cigarette smoke, aggressive drivers, rude and hateful people who use religion to justify their agendas.

Favorite Restaurant that has a drive thru?

Dunkin Donuts

Favorite Color?

Darker or deeper shades of purple.

Celebrity Crush?

That changes almost hourly. LOL. Right now, we've been binge watching Dexter and I have a crush on Michael C. Hall (Dexter). I loved him in Six Feet Under, too.

Collect anything?

Books, music, and miniature tea sets

The beach or the mountains?

Beach

What is your spirit animal?

I have crazy mad love for monkeys so many my spirit animal is a monkey? Not sure.

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?

Most of Europe.

If I wasn't afraid I would?

Scuba dive or sky dive

Someday I want to?

Rent a villa for a month in Santorini Greece

You have to give up ONE for a whole week, which is it?

Phone

Access to any form of book.

I can't do that, you're crazy!

What is the weirdest place you have ever done the "deed"?

OMG - too many weird spots to list!! Hahaha!! One odd spot was floating down a river while holding on to an inner tube with other people floating down the same river around us.

Thank you, Ann Lister, for answering these for us!
